State of the Net for the Week of November 18

Yvette Miller ⬥ 18 November

As new TLD applicants and the ICANN community attend sessions at the 48th ICANN Meeting in Buenos Aires, ICANN is working to push as many applicants as possible through Contracting and Delegation. To date, 24 top-level domains (TLDs) have been incorporated into the technical architecture of the Internet. That’s more than the total number of TLDs that exist now, outside of the new TLD program. Another 135 applicants have signed contracts; 235 applicants are engaged in the contracting process; and 958 applicants have been invited to enter into a contract with ICANN.

ICANN took the opportunity to announce the introduction of its latest strategic panel: the Strategic Panel on Future of Global Internet Cooperation. ICANN CEO Fadi Chehadé said this panel will provide input to the Internet governance summit in Brazil that is slated for Spring 2014.
