Twitter is in the news because it has changed its algorithm for its timelines. According to Re/code, Twitter’s algorithm now “searches for popular tweets in your ‘social graph’,” and then adds them to your timeline. In other words, if “lots of your pals have shown interest” in a tweet by favoriting or retweeting it, it might show up on your timeline.
Re/code notes that Twitter is still working on just how to inform users about the source of each tweet that is produced through this algorithm. Users, on their part, may worry that being associated with a tweet will imply endorsement. For brands, this is another example of how they are beholden to the changing business models of the social media networks they are on, perhaps another example of why there seems to be a trend towards brands gaining more control of their digital real estate.
